The Wall Street Journal Asked Me About the Wildest Buyer Requests I’ve Ever Received

There are certain emails you don't expect to land in your inbox. Being asked by The Wall Street Journal to share one of the more unusual requests I've received from a real estate client was certainly one of them.

I was recently featured in The Wall Street Journal alongside other real estate professionals for a story exploring the wonderfully specific (and sometimes downright unexpected!) things buyers consider non-negotiable when searching for a home.

After years of helping buyers throughout Northern Virginia, West Virginia, and Maryland, I certainly had a few stories to choose from.

When a "Must-Have" Gets Very Specific

Every buyer begins their search with a list:

  • Bedrooms

  • Bathrooms

  • Acreage

  • Location

  • Commute

  • and many more ...

But spend enough time in real estate and you quickly learn that the things that actually make someone fall in love with a home are rarely confined to a spreadsheet. I've had clients searching for everything from spring fed creeks, to a home with an Aga range, to A-frame homes, to making sure the home wasn't next to a data center.  As unusual as some requests might sound, I actually love them.

Because my job is to understand how they want to live and then figure out how we find it. Sometimes that means searching beyond the obvious neighborhoods. Sometimes it means recognizing potential in a property that doesn't immediately check every box. And sometimes it means calling another agent and asking a question I never imagined would become part of my career.

There Really Is a House for Everyone

One of my favorite things about working in real estate is discovering just how differently people define their dream home. For one person, luxury is a perfectly designed kitchen. For another, it's ten private acres where they can't see a neighbor. It might be a historic home with original millwork, enough garage space for a car collection, a swimming pool no one can see from the house. It could be one incredibly specific feature they've been dreaming about for years.

The longer I work in real estate, the more convinced I become that luxury isn't necessarily about price. It's about finding the home that allows you to live exactly the way you want to live.

And sometimes, that can be wonderfully specific.

I'm incredibly honored to have been included in The Wall Street Journal's conversation about some of the wildest home-buyer must-haves real estate agents have encountered.
